Aboriginal specific positions (ie. those positions identified in the criteria of the position description as requiring an Aboriginal person only to fill the role) are advertised in Aboriginal papers such as Koori Mail. Positions are also advertised in local papers and professional magazines
The Aboriginal Employment and EEO officer will liaise with Aboriginal Community Employment Agencies to put forward suitable candidates for positions that have been advertised.
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply for positions for which their qualifications, skills and abilities match the criteria listed on the position description.

Once employed within NSLHD there are many opportunities for career development and advancement and these can be discussed with your manager or the Aboriginal Employment & EEO Officer who will assist you with career planning.
Further employment opportunities are conducted through cadetships to NSLHD.
Advertising and selection for Aboriginal cadetships is conducted through the NSW Health and successful cadets can select which hospital in NSLHD they will work at during their twelve week paid placement.

Creating employment opportunities
NSLHD is committed to creating employment opportunities in a culturally sensitive environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is our aim to improve the cultural competency of our staff to assist in “Closing the Gap” in employment and health outcomes for Aboriginal people.
Mandatory Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training has been developed and is currently being rolled out to all employees, volunteers and contractors across our services.
The purpose of the NSLHD ABORIGINAL WORKFORCE STRATEGY is to improve NSLHD attraction and retention of Indigenous employees through leadership, effective recruitment, career development and the engendering of cultural respect. A concerted effort not only to attract Indigenous employees but retain and grow Indigenous employees is critical to the success of the strategy.
