UPDATE: TERM 2 (April-July) COURSES SUSPENDED

​In the interest of keeping our participants safe and well, and to minimise the potential for transmission of COVID 19 (Corona Virus), our Healthy Lifestyle classes have been suspended also for Term 2, 2020.

We appreciate the value of these classes to our participants and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. However, it was deemed necessary to suspend the classes given the potential risk of COVID 19 specifically to older residents and the evolving situation in Northern Sydney.

Our participant hotline number on 8877 5335 (and this page) will be updated with further information in relation to Term 3 (July-September) at the beginning of July.

ONLINE PROGRAMS

​It has been brought to our attention that some exercise providers are providing online classes (e.g. pilates, gentle exercise) via platforms such as Zoom.

Unfortunately, Healthy Lifestyle is not able to offer any interactive online exercise program at this time. Any online programs promoted as being part of our service are not facilitated by, or connected to in any way, to the Healthy Lifestyle Exercise Program within Northern Sydney Local Health District.

 

EXERCISE RESOURCES

​While you are unable to attend your regular exercise program with us, please have a look at the following resources that may assist you keep active and safe in the meantime:

  • Staying Active Staying SafeStaying Active Staying Safe: A basic chair-assisted exercise program to help prevent falls. The resource was developed by Health Promotion to help older less able older adults remain active and safe. A booklet is available for download, and if you have a DVD player, you can also request a free DVD that demonstrates the exercises (while stocks last):

  • Get Healthy Information & Coaching Service: To receive support to maintain your physical activity and healthy eating goals from a health coach, call the free NSW Health Get Healthy Information & Coaching Service. Note: After registering your interest you should be contacted within 5 days to start your individualised program.
  • Choose Health Be Active: To help encourage older Australia to be physically active, the Federal Government, Department of Health & Ageing and the Department of Veteran's Affairs have produced this resource. Some items are not appropriate for the current environment, but you may find some information useful:

Who are we?

Healthy Lifestyle is a physical activity program for adults, 18 years and over. However, they are designed for older adults in our community.

A part of Health Promotion (Northern Sydney Local Health District), the program has been run across the Northern Sydney area for over 30 years and receives more than 10,000 enrolments each year.

Courses are suitable for beginners and those who exercise regularly. They are also beneficial for people dealing with osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease or other chronic conditions.

Our participants report they feel stronger, fitter and more mobile for taking part in exercise classes. They also enjoy the opportunity to socialise and meet new friends.

Leaders

Course leaders are fully registered to teach their exercise discipline and have training in working with older adults. They also undergo professional development training and performance assessment on an annual basis.

Fees

Healthy Lifestyle operates on a non-profit basis with the income generated by course fees used to help cover the program’s operating costs. Concessions are available for those on a full government pension, health care card, DVA and staff of Northern Sydney Local Health District.

Standard 10 week course: $120.00 - full price, $96.00 concession. Check the term brochure for non-standard course fees (e.g. 9 week courses, 1.5hr per week courses).

Courses

Healthy Lifestyle offers courses in aquafitness, gentle exercise, strength training, tai chi and yoga. Courses run for four, ten-week terms each year that coincide with school terms.

Generally, courses run for 60 minutes unless otherwise stated in the term brochure.

Courses are offered at over 50 community venues in the Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Ryde, Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore areas. Click a location for address details.
