A team of young people, who live locally (representing all local government areas in Northern Sydney) are employed by Health Promotion on a casual basis.
Aged between 15 and 20 years old, Youth Consultants are trained and mentored and provide a unique perspective on young people and healthcare providers, youth services, schools, local councils, planners and policy makers.
The program places a strong emphasis on young people as equal partners in providing a meaningful voice for change.
Northern Sydney Youth Health Promotion (NSYHP) conducts formal consultations with local service providers and develop recommendations to assist these services improve youth friendliness and cater to the needs of young people aged 12 to 24 years.
NSYHP is involved in a range of projects through Northern Sydney Health Promotion.
For example: Smoke Free Environment, Healthy School Canteens, The Healthy E.D.G.E. in High Schools, Urban Planning for Health (UP4Health), Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) for Schools and STop The Supply (Secondary Supply of Alcohol).
Workshops, Forums & Resources
- runs workshops and consultations at local high schools
- contributes to parent and local community education forums
- works in partnership to develop resources
- conducts consultations with local young people about youth heath issues and health promotion strategies
The Youth Health Promotion team has adapted the 'You Just Don't Smoke' concept to produce the 'You just DON'T smoke around your mates' sign. The team displays the signs at local youth events they attend to help promote a smoke free environment.

NSYHP advocates for young people through participation at conferences, committees, inter-agencies, and through a variety of media and events.
Youth Health Promotion and North Sydney Council has developed the YouthSource website which provides a central access point to youth friendly services and upcoming youth events throughout the Northern Sydney Region.
It offers quick links to service information across youth health categories creating a central location for young people, parents, teachers, health professionals, youth workers, and the community at large to access appropriate youth friendly services in their area.
The website is currently undergoing a major update. However, you can register your interest to be notified once it is goes live.
