Radiation oncology medical physics is a specialist area in the science of cancer treatment using radiation. Radiation oncology medical physicists develop, implement and monitor procedures which allow the safe delivery of radiation to patients undergoing radiotherapy. They also research and develop better ways to treat cancer. Radiation oncology medical physicists liaise with radiation oncologists, radiation therapists and other allied health professionals to drive, implement and maintain the sophisticated technologies used.
Research and education are important aspects of modern cancer care. The radiation oncology medical physics team has a research focus to utilise modern imaging and radiation delivery techniques to improve the accuracy of patient treatment. This focus is aimed at providing safe delivery of the high doses of radiation required to provide optimum care for patients.
The radiation oncology team is a world leader in adaptive radiotherapy; enabling our clinicians to adapt the treatment during delivery. We have pioneered real-time adaptive radiotherapy for prostate and lung cancer to continuously target lesions that move while you breathe.
We are pioneering artificial intelligence driven radiotherapy enabling us to provide the best daily treatment for a range of cancers. The team members participate in a large number of clinical trials using state of the art technologies to treat patients. The team has research partnership locally with the Universities of Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle; internationally with Aarhus University Hospital, University of Michigan and Brigham's and Women's Hospital; and also a commercial collaboration with Varian Medical Systems. NSCC is a reference site for Sun Nuclear Corporation. NSCC is part of the Varian Medical Systems Advanced Intelligence Consortium (AIC) of early adopters of the Ethos platform collaborating and contributing to international practice standards. The radiation oncology medical physicist uses scientific research and technical expertise to help improve the quality and safe delivery of radiation used for cancer treatment.

A/Prof Jeremy Booth
A/Prof Jeremy Booth is the Head of Medical Physics at Northern Sydney Cancer Centre, Royal North Shore Hospital. Dr Booth completed his doctoral study on methods to account for prostate motion in radiotherapy in 2002 and completed his clinical certification in 2005. In 2015 A/Prof Booth was awarded the ACPSEM Boyce Worthley Young Achievers Award. A/Prof Booth has an established research profile; presenting invited presentations, publishing and reviewing in journals, contributing to medical device patents and attracting Govt and vendor funding to undertake research. A/Prof Booth has attracted over $6M as a Chief Investigator, chaired 5 investigator led Phase I clinical trials and published >80 manuscripts in international journals.
A/Prof Booth has an adjunct appointment with The University of Sydney Institute of Medical Physics where he has lectured and supervised research since 2004. He has supervised 17 MSc and 3 PhD students and currently supervises two MSc and two PhD students. A/Prof Booth has provided consultation to Federal and State (NSW Health) expert panels, acted as NSW Treasury gateway assessor, and been a Director of ACPSEM and the ACPSEM Foundation (2007-2010).
