The Northern Sydney Cancer Centre Day Treatment Unit is an outpatient unit for individuals receiving cancer and/or supportive treatments. The Unit is state of the art, bright and modern with comfortable recliner chairs and personal TV's, with an outdoor courtyard.

The unit treats adult individuals with all types of cancer, including common malignancies such as Lung, Breast, Prostate and Bowel, as well as patients with blood cancers such as Leukaemia and Lymphoma. All treatment is delivered by highly qualified and experienced Registered Nurses that aim to provide excellent clinical care within best practice guidelines.

Cancer treatments include chemotherapy (drugs used to destroy cancer cells) and biological/targeted therapies (drugs designed to interfere with specific molecules necessary for tumour growth and progression).  The Unit also facilitates pre-bone marrow transplant care and in some cases will perform an outpatient bone marrow transplant, for patients meeting specific criteria, enabling a reduction in hospital stay.

In addition to cancer treatments the Day Treatment Unit delivers supportive treatments e.g. blood transfusions.

The unit is also actively involved in cancer clinical trials (research studies involving people), which enables patient access to novel and innovative treatments of the future.

Eligibility

  • Individuals must receive a medical referral to an appropriate clinician.
  • Individuals should be mobile and self-caring, or if physically limited, will be required to bring a carer for the duration of treatment.

Referral

Patients must receive a medical referral to an appropriate clinician directly or through a multi-disciplinary clinic.

Treatment appointments are negotiated through the Day Treatment Nurse Unit Manager.

Urgent cases

Urgent cases can be referred directly to a Clinician. Alternatively, patients may attend the Emergency Department at Royal North Shore Hospital, where there is 24 hour access to medical care

Other Information

All new patients referred for cancer therapy will be invited to attend a pre-treatment information session. The education is facilitated by a specialist cancer nurse, whom will give a general overview of cancer treatment, side effects, and recommendations for self-care whilst receiving cancer treatment. It is essential that a referring clinician notifies the unit of any known infections or multi-resistant known organisms such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) at the time of referral.

Individuals should alert the Day Treatment Nurse Unit Manager if they are experiencing any respiratory symptoms, as they will need to be isolated due to the Immune compromised nature of the patient population attending Northern Sydney Cancer Centre.
