The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) also known as a Critical Care Unit Intensive Therapy Unit is a special department of a hospital that provides intensive-care medicine.
They cater to patients with the most serious illnesses, most of which are life-threatening and need constant, close monitoring and support from specialist equipment and medication in order to maintain normal bodily functions. Hornsby Hospital ICU is staffed by highly trained doctors and critical care nurses who specialise in caring for the most severely ill patients. Patients are transferred to an Intensive Care Unit from the ward, Emergency Department, Operating Theatres or another hospital when they require constant invasive monitoring, point of care diagnostics and complex supportive therapy that cannot be provided anywhere else within the hospital.
