Ongoing assessment and management of patients with known or established type 2 respiratory failure and patients post initiation of non-invasive ventilation referred from Respiratory Special Care Unit for follow up.



Patients with known or established respiratory failure. (Patients with sleep apnoea alone should be referred to the Sleep Disorders Clinic).


  • Referred by respiratory physicians following assessment and diagnosis of respiratory failure.
  • Direct referral by respiratory admitting consultant for Rescue Unit following admission under their care for NIV management.

Urgent cases

Refer to on call respiratory consultant for urgent review.

Other information

  • All patients should be accompanied by a carer or support person if there are mobility or care issues.
  • Patients should bring ventilation equipment and any relevant imaging/investigations.
