The Brolga Unit is a child and adolescent mental health unit situated in the grounds of Hornsby Hospital. The unit provides up to 12 beds for young people aged between 12 and 17 years of age who are experiencing a serious mental health problem.

The Brolga team consist of specialist mental health professionals including Psychiatrists, Registrars, Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapist, Dietician, Pharmacist and Psychologists. The team works collaboratively to provide a safe and therapeutic environment based on a client centred model of care.

Eligibility

Young people aged between 12 and 17 years of age who are experiencing a serious mental health problem and require restrictive care, treatment and observation.

 

Referral

The Brolga Unit accepts referrals from Specialist Community Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) teams.

 

Urgent cases

Urgent and crisis cases should contact the local Child & Adolescent/Youth Mental Health service.

Where there is an emergency clients should attend their local Emergency Department.

Urgent and crisis cases include where there are concerns for the safety of a young person (e.g. imminent risk of self-harm or suicide); risk of harm to others; acute and sudden onset of mental health symptoms.

 

Other Information

The Brolga Unit Learning Centre
The Learning Centre provides a structured learning environment for students while they are in the care of Brolga. The program is established in order to meet the needs of students unable to attend regular school settings due to their admission at Brolga. The education team comprises of a Classroom Teacher and School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs).

Brolga is an in-patient unit and as such does not have opening/closing hours. Referrals are usually reviewed and processed during normal working hours.
