The Mental Health Inpatient Unit is located at Royal North Shore Hospital for those aged 18+ experiencing an acute episode of mental illness. 



Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis that requires a period of intensive inpatient support to help stabilise their mental health.


People access this service via presentation at the Emergency Department or from the Local Community Mental Health Service, which is located at Royal North Shore Community Health Centre level 1, 2C Herbert Street. This centre in the grounds of Royal North Shore Hospital.

Urgent cases

There are several options:
Ring the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511. This line is staffed by experienced clinicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will be able to speak with a clinician who can provide recommendations about how to manage the situation or put you in contact with the appropriate mental health team.

Attend the Emergency Department at Royal North Shore Hospital, where there is 24 hour access to specialist mental health care and support.

If the situation is urgent or becoming dangerous ring Triple Zero (000) and request ambulance and/or police. They will be able to assist the person safely to the hospital Emergency Department to access mental health care.

Other Information

Visiting hours are between 12:00pm and 2:00pm, and 4pm and 8:00pm - Monday to Friday, and between 10:00am and 8:00pm on weekends.

Children and young people are welcome to visit family on the ward; however all visits need to be pre-arranged with the nurse in charge to ensure the family room and relevant resources are available.

Patients and visitors are asked to avoid bringing some items into the unit. These include valuables and contraband items. Contraband items include anything that can be used as a weapon or means to harm a person, such as razors, metal blades and lighters. On visiting the unit all visitors will be asked to secure their personal belongings in a locker and any items being taken onto the unit will be searched by nursing staff to ensure no contraband items are taken onto the unit. If a nursing staff member has a suspicion that a visitor has contraband on their person that they have not declared the visitor may be denied access to the unit.

Mobile phone use is only permitted under supervision. Mobile phones will be removed from the patient and kept in a secure place until the patient is discharged or goes on leave. All patients will have access to a public telephone during their stay.

All wards in NSW Health facilities are smoke free. Smokers will be supported in their drug withdrawal with appropriate clinical care and the provision of free Nicotine Replacement Therapy during their stay.
