Detailed planning is now underway for Mona Vale Hospital's Palliative Care Unit – the first dedicated inpatient unit of its type on the Northern Beaches. The 10-bed specialist service will be located in a new building alongside the existing Beachside Rehabilitation Unit.

Northern Beaches Health Service General Manager Frank Bazik welcomed the progress, saying we now have an idea of what the new building may look like with the release of the artistic concept for the site.

"The unique inpatient service will provide specialist physical and emotional care during the final stages of illness. It will be supported by a multi-disciplinary team of palliative care specialists and will have a patient-centred approach within a home-like environment.

"We will be looking to provide a comfortable and welcoming setting for patients and their families during difficult and challenging times.

"Detailed designs are set to be completed in the coming months, ahead of consultation with staff and community groups like the Friends of Palliative Care working group, who have worked so hard for the facility to become a reality."

The Palliative Care Unit will operate next to the new Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit, which will provide specialist services for older people.

Construction is expected to begin late this year.
