Public Health Unit

The Public Health Unit provides health protection services to the people of the Northern Sydney Local Health District which extends from Sydney Harbour to the Hawkesbury River.

Our mission

To protect the health of the population in the Northern Sydney Local Health District, by providing professional, high quality public health services, education, research, information and interventions.

What we do

The role of the Public Health Unit is to identify and prevent or minimise public health risks to the community.

The Public Health Unit has a role in the enforcement of public health legislation. These responsibilities are largely defined by NSW legislation such as the Public Health Act 2010 External Link, the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008 External Link and the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 External Link.

The Public Health Unit consists of three teams: Communicable Diseases, Immunisation, and Environmental Health. Public health unit staff members work closely with general practitioners, community health workers and hospital-based clinicians, pathology laboratories, schools and childcare centres, local councils, aged care facilities, Medicare Locals and with other government agencies to protect public health. Food poisoning outbreaks are investigated jointly by the Public Health Unit and the NSW Food Authority.
