Nausea is an uneasy feeling in the stomach often described as feeling queasy. It is a feeling that often leads to vomiting. Unfortunately nausea is a common side effect of cancer treatment.

Strategies to help manage nausea & vomiting:

  • Take nausea medication as prescribed; 20 – 30 minutes before meals and as required between meals.
  • If your nausea medications are not sufficiently managing your nausea, let your treating team know.
  • Opt for cool or cold foods if aromas from hot food are triggering your nausea.
  • Snack regularly. Sometimes a lack of food actually makes nausea worse.
  • Bland, simple foods like crackers or salty soups may be easier to manage than flavourful foods that have lots of fat and/or spice in them e.g. curries.
  • If vomiting – keep well hydrated.
  • Sit up if you can for 30 – 60 mins after eating

Cool Meal Inspiration

Breakfast Slice

Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 25 minutes

Line a small baking tray or loaf tin with baking paper. Finely dice and lightly cook on stove 1/2 red capsicum, 1 medium carrot, 5 – 6 mushrooms until just soft. Put cooked mixture into large bowl. Add 1 zucchini grated, 1 cup grated cheese/feta/ ricotta and 8 large eggs. Pour into tray and bake on 150⁰ for 15 – 20 minutes or until golden and cooked all the way through. Perfect for breakfast or a snack on the go.

Store in fridge for up to 3 days.

 

Peanut Protein Cookies

Recipe: Mel Scattergood, Senior Clinical Dietitian.

Prep: 5 minutes Cook: 20 minutes, yields 9 - 10 biscuits

In a large bowl combine: 1 cup peanut butter, 2 scoops of protein powder (40g), 2 eggs and 2/3 cup of preferred sugar i.e. brown sugar, coconut sugar. If the mixture is too dry add a dash of milk. Place on a tray lined with baking paper and bake at 180⁰ for 10 – 15 minutes. 1 cookie = 320kcal and 15g protein
