Cansupport provides support services and information to people with cancer, their families and carers. We are based in the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Our programs and services are available to people with cancer, their carers, and families and loved ones who are receiving cancer treatment in the Northern Sydney region at both public and private hospitals and treatment.
Cansupport provides a free Wig Library service for people who experience hair loss whilst undergoing cancer treatment such as Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. The Wig Library is open to all patients receiving treatment at either a public or private hospital or treatment centre within the Northern Sydney Local Health District.
A large, high quality selection of wigs is available for loan with each person being able to borrow one wig. A personalised and private wig fitting is undertaken by a Cansupport Team Member. A selection of turbans, scarves and beanies is also available to take home. Wigs are purchased thanks to the generosity of the Dry July Foundation and other supporters.
Cansupport also facilitates a number of programs at the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre including the Look Good…Feel Better Program, the Cancer Council's Financial Counselling Service.
The service also provides a comprehensive Cancer Information Centre. The Centre provides reliable take-home resources about different types of cancer, cancer care, support services and activities that are available for people with cancer and their loved ones.
The Centre can also provide referrals and information about other Cancer Centre services including Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Complementary Therapy programs such as Relaxation & Meditation and community services for practical assistance and support.
A regular program of education and information sessions is conducted throughout the year for both specific cancer types and general topics of interest for anyone affected by cancer. Recent topics have included diet and nutrition, pain management and specific breast cancer topics such as surgery and reconstruction. A monthly calendar of events is available via our mailing list.
Cansupport is supported by specialist Volunteers who work in the Centre to support patients, their carers and families. A number of volunteers who have experienced cancer themselves or have cared for someone with a cancer diagnosis are available to provide peer support.
