The North Shore Cardiovascular Education Centre's primary role is to provide a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation service for the patients of the Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), the North Shore Private Hospital and other health facilities on referral.

Cardiac Rehabilitation programs maximise safe recovery, reinforce secondary prevention strategies, promote early return to work and normal activities while being instrumental in reducing hospital readmissions. The Centre liases closely with local general practitioners and is supported by the cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons of the RNSH.  The service complies with the NSW Department of Health Policy standards for Cardiac Rehabilitation.

The NSCEC is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of a Clinical Nurse Consultant, Exercise Physiologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and Pharmacists.  The team is overseen by an Advisory Panel meeting annually.

Other information

Patients are assessed during their inpatient episode of care (Phase I). Their cardiac rehabilitation needs are identified and the patient educated accordingly.  Patients are given a comprehensive booklet which can be used as an ongoing information resource.  Referral is made to the NSCEC program for those living in the local area or to a program nearest to their place of residence.

Staff from the NSCEC maintain close contact with other Rehabilitation programs to ensure referral takes place where appropriate. The program is designed to be flexible and to meet individual patients needs. A Phase III maintenance program (The Pulsers) is offered to patients who wish to continue in a more structured exercise program long term.
