What we do

We are a multidisciplinary co-located diabetes service and welcome adults with diabetes mellitus (aged over 18 years). We are here to help people with diabetes and complex care needs who live within the Ryde and Hunters Hill local government areas, and some surrounding areas.

We provide specialist consults with friendly, professional, and supportive diabetes doctors (endocrinologists), accredited diabetes nurse educators, dietitians, and podiatrists.


We care for and treat people with:

  • Complex diabetes care needs
  • We see people with Type 1, Type 2 and ‘LADA Type 1.5’ diabetes
  • Fear of insulin
  • Low blood glucose levels (hypos)
  • Complications from diabetes
  • Complex diabetes treatments
  • Diabetes distress impacting on self care
  • Mental health and diabetes needs
  • Physical and intellectual disabilities
  • Foot wounds
  • Dietary information and carbohydrate counting needs
  • Palliative care patients with diabetes
  • People requiring steroids which can impact on blood glucose levels
  • Elderly people with diabetes
  • Young and middle aged adults with diabetes

What to bring

  • Blood glucose monitoring records if available
  • Referral letter from doctor
  • Pathology (lab blood tests) results
  • Current list of all medications and injections types/doses (e.g. insulin type) if possible
  • Insulin/injection equipment
  • Blood glucose meter if you have one

When to visit us

  • Adults with diabetes (aged over 18 years) requiring diabetes tablets, insulin or injection treatments
  • People already using insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices
  • People who wish to use flash glucose monitoring and sensors
  • People experiencing difficulties with diabetes management

How to visit us

Ryde Hospital provides 350 free car parking spaces spread across six car parks. The main car park comprises both covered and open air parking spaces via Denistone Road. The other large car park is a covered car park in the basement of the Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre via Fourth Avenue. There is a patient drop off zone outside the emergency department.

Referral information

Medical, allied health or nursing referral is preferred by phone, fax, letter or email.

Please provide written referrals, including recent pathology results and medical history, where possible.
