What we do

The Familial Cancer Service provides genetic counselling, cancer risk assessments, medical advice and where appropriate, genetic testing to individuals and their families who may be at increased risk of developing cancer because of their family history. The Familial Cancer Service also runs a specialty combined familial-endocrine genetic testing and management clinic with the Royal North Shore endocrinology team for individuals carrying susceptibilities to endocrine tumours.

A valid medical referral is required and should be addressed to Dr Michael Field. The referral should record whether genetic testing has already taken place in the family.

Exit off Pacific Highway and the M1 will take you to the hospital on Reserve Road in St Leonards

The Familial Cancer Service is located in the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre, which is on level 1, Acute Services Building, Royal North Shore Hospital. When entering the hospital's main entrance via Reserve Road, take the Orange Lifts (or stairs) in the hospital's main foyer on Level 3. Exit the lifts at level 1 and follow the signs to the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre where you can check in at reception.

Referral information

A valid medical referral is required and should be addressed to Dr Michael Field. The referral should record whether genetic testing has already taken place in the family.

Once received the referral will be triaged and the referred patient will be contacted by phone or letter.

The service can provide advice to families, specialists and multidisciplinary teams on appropriate referrals. Please call the genetic counsellor on 02 9463 1554.

Prior to an appointment being arranged, the referred individual will be asked to provide a detailed family history and some cancers may need to be confirmed.

Other information

Appointments with a clinical geneticist are bulk billed. Any related charges will be discussed with patients prior to treatment.
