Videofluoroscopy
The videofluoroscopy clinic is a clinic run by the Speech Pathology Department to further investigate your swallowing difficulties under moving x-ray. This is in contrast to a barium swallow which assesses oesophageal function. You must first have a consult with a Speech Pathologist to further understand the nature of your difficulties. A formal radiology referral form must be completed by a medical practitioner prior to being booked in.
Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing
We also provide outpatient appointments for Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) including in situations where VFSS is unavailable or not able to be completed. This is an invasive assessment when a nasendoscope is passed through the nasal passage into the throat to visualized pharyngeal and laryngeal structures and to assess safety of swallowing function, presence of aspiration, residue and potential modifications of diet. The assessment takes 20-30 minutes and no anaesthetic is required. A referral form must be completed by a medical practitioner prior to being booked in.
