 What we do

We provide treatment and management for people who have had a recent transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or stroke, cared for in the RNSH Acute Stroke Unit and require follow up to optimise their risk factors and reduce the risk of secondary stroke.

 

The clinic is designed to offer patients who have had a recent stroke the best possible stroke prevention therapy. We offer a combined problem solving approach and provide a complete health assessment.

 When to visit us

The clinic is an alternative to an inpatient admission for patients who have recently experienced TIA or stroke.

 

Preference is given to patients who have been cared for in the Royal North Shore Acute Stroke Unit and hospitals in NSLHD. Referrals received directly from GP's or other LHD's will be considered and triaged accordingly.

 How to visit us

Exits off the Pacific Highway and the M1 will take you to the hospital on Reserve Road in St Leonards

The hospital is a 5 minute walk from St Leonards Station

The Stroke Clinic is located at Check in B of the Ambulatory Care Centre.

 

When you enter the hospital walk past the yellow lifts towards the rear of the building. The Centre is located on the right hand side of the main corridor between the orange and green lifts. Check in D can be found by turning left after you pass the enquiries desk. 

 Referral information

All patients require a GP referral, clearly outlining the reason for referral, listing relevant medical history, previous investigations and current medication list to ensure communication of patient management in the community.

 

Referral must be received on the day of presentation for consideration and to facilitate timely access to the clinic if eligible.

 

Indications for urgent referral to local Emergency Department 

  • Refer patients with acute neurological symptoms thought to be secondary to TIA or stroke directly to the emergency department.

 

Inclusion Criteria

  • Stroke or TIA in the past weeks
  • Preference is given to patients who have been cared for in the Royal North Shore Acute Stroke Unit and hospitals in NSLHD. Referrals received directly from GP's or other LHD's will be considered and triaged accordingly.
  • TIA patients referred from Ryde Hospital ED are accepted.

 

Exclusion Criteria

  • Patients in Hornsby and Northern Beaches catchment should be referred to the relevant hospital.

 

Providing more information will aid the triage process and make it more likely that your patient will be seen in the most timely manner possible.

 

Please submit referrals using the eReferral system through HealthLink, which can be accessed through most clinical software systems.

 

Advise the patient referral comprises a comprehensive five-to-six-hour visit as an alternative to a three-to-four day inpatient admission. All eligible patients will receive a clinical assessment, stroke protocol MRI of the brain, doppler ultrasound, trans thoracic echocardiogram, holter ECG, and fasting bloods.

 Other information

If you have an appointment with the Stroke Clinic and you no longer wish to attend please call and inform the secretary with at least 24 hours notice so that your appointment can be used for other patients.

The RNSH Stroke Clinic does not provide rehabilitation.
