Loss of Appetite

Loss of appetite is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment. Changes to appetite may be from a number of causes including; cancer disease, side effects of medications, stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue.

During periods of poor appetite it is important to remember the body requires nourishment and fuel to continue to function properly.

Strategies to help manage poor appetite and help maintain good nutrition:

  • Identify what may be the cause of your nausea e.g. low mood, and talk to your treating team about what you can do.
  • Try small frequent meals (i.e 6 small meals/day).
  • Have convenient snacks available e.g. cheese & biscuits, yoghurt, nuts or muesli bars etc.
  • Try nourishing liquid meals if eating whole foods is challenging, see over the page for recipe ideas.
  • Remember even though it is hard to eat when you aren't hungry, your body still requires nourishment or fuel to keep functioning at its best.
