The 2023 Exceptional People Awards were held on Thursday 14 March​ 2024 to celebrate and formally recognise staff and volunteers across the district.

​Individual winner: Susan Williams

As the lead for the Parkinson's Inpatient Experience project, Susan has significantly improved the identification of Parkinson's Disease patients in inpatient wards and the quality of care they receive.

Dr. Chen's remarkable work in leading the eReferral project at our district has not only transformed our local healthcare system but has left a lasting positive impact on patient access to services.

Jason was instrumental in the implementation of frailty prevention physiotherapy for frail patients discharged from the Emergency Department, resulting in a reduction of frailty burden.

Team winner: RNSH Specialist Palliative Care: Clinical Nurse Consultants

The palliative care nursing team consistently demonstrate the importance and benefits of informed, patient-centred, coordinated, compassionate care in alleviating symptomatic and emotional burdens for patients and families.

​Individual winner: Solly Geddam

As the Nurse Unit Manager for the Royal North Shore Ambulatory Care Centre , Solly leads her team with clear messaging, fairness and equity that results in the staff feeling valued and empowered to perform their roles to the best of their ability.

Team winner: Engineering team at Macquarie Hospital

The Engineering team at Macquarie Hospital campus was commended for their outstanding efforts during the refurbishment and relocation of four of the aged care assessment service teams to the Lodge building at Macquarie Hospital including a team from Ryde Hospital who were relocated following the Ryde hospital refurbishment.

 Research, innovation & digital health

​Individual winner: Dr Mark Montebello​

Mark has built capacity for collaborative research in the Drug & Alcohol Services and his research has a strong clinical focus and includes development of novel treatments for substance use disorders, improving treatment outcomes for Hepatitis C in Drug & Alcohol Service setting and cognitive impairment including acute intoxication.

Team winner: NSLHD Long COVID Service team

This team has been at the forefront of addressing a vital chronic health issue through a uniquely virtual care only model, and they have gone above and beyond to provide effective and efficient management of long COVID symptoms.

 Sustainability and planetary health

Individual winner: Erin Foulsham

Erin, a Clinical Nurse Educator for Anaesthetics at RNSH has demonstrated outstanding efforts to reduce the use and environmental impact of single-use plastic in RNSH operating theatres.

Team winner: Royal North Shore Sustainability Committee

The Committee has successfully spearheaded dozens of sustainability initiatives including phasing out use of patient socks, replacing plastic cutlery in wards with reusable silver and disposable wooden cutlery, installing an electrolysed water system in the kitchen to reduce the use of harmful chemicals etc.

Team winner: Net Zero Lead Respiratory Team

This team have led the design and implementation of three planetary health initiatives to reduce low value care and reduce waste associated with respiratory care. These include the Health Professional Education Campaign, Respiratory inhaler recycling program and Designing an Asthma Management Clinical Pathway in the Emergency Department.

Individual winner: Meredith Oatley

Meredith is an extremely passionate Nurse Practitioner who embodies the CORE values and Behaviours. She is a role model for the nursing staff and the nursing team look up to her and aspire to be a nurse leader like her.

Duke brings immense joy to the clients in the Drug and Alcohol inpatient treatment program. ­Duke and Ross consistently demonstrate CORE values and behaviours working with kindness and compassion with clients suffering from substance use issues.

Winner: Jenny Crane

Jenny's exceptional leadership as a Department Director of the Royal North Shore Pharmacy department is characterised by her flexibility and willingness to prioritise the interests and needs of her staff while upholding high departmental morale and implementing forward-thinking changes to meet the future needs of the Health Service.

 Chief executive commendation

​Dr Naomi Hammond:

Dr Hammond has been the head of the Intensive Care Unit’s Research team for over eleven years.

She also currently holds the key positions of Program Head for Critical Care and Sepsis Australia and Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales. In this, Dr Hammond has made significant contributions to critical care research amongst many other achievements.​
