Acute consultation services are specialist palliative care inpatient consulting services. They offer dedicated support to patients facing life-limiting illnesses and supporting other hospital staff who are caring for such people.
The supportive and palliative care consult team consists of specialist palliative care doctors, nurses, and allied health staff. Acute consult services are provided at Hornsby, Northern Beaches, Royal North Shore, and Ryde hospitals.
The role of the consult service includes:
- Managing complex symptoms and pain control
- Psychosocial support for patients who are dying in hospital and their carers
- Complex advanced care planning
- Supporting end-of-life care decision making
