Bloomfield Hospital, Orange

alternate text 48There is a local education program for psychiatry trainees attended, where appropriate, by psychiatrists and career medical officers. In addition to the one hour per week of individual supervision and the ward reviews and clinical interviews conducted with patients there is a fortnightly journal club meeting (Bloomfield only), fortnightly case conference (video linked to Dubbo), additionally each year three half day educational workshops are held in Orange (Dubbo registrars attend). These are developed in response to educational needs of the local trainees. The last three workshops were Perinatal Psychiatry in August 2011, Psychotherapy for clinical practice in March 2012 and Dialectic Behaviour Therapy in May 2012. There is fortnightly clinical education forum that has a one hour lecture format and is multidisciplinary. Trainees in Year 1, 2 and 3 video link one afternoon per week to formal education course either at NSW IOP or HNET.

In addition specific sessions for clinical examination practice are organized jointly by Orange and Dubbo to provide examination practice for OCI and OSCE exams as trainees approach this.

At Bloomfield the local training scheme has grown in the last five years. We currently have RANZCP accredited terms in Inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (basic and advanced trainees (Dr Susan Blinkhorn) ; Liaison psychiatry (Dr Fran Orr); Old Age Psychiatry (Dr Carolyn Jones); Community and Mental Health Emergency Centre (Dr Jarret Johnston); Forensic Rehabilitation (Dr Nick Burns); Acute Adult Inpatient psychiatry (Dr Martyn Patfield).

We have both locally based trainees and trainees on secondment for 6 months or more (accommodation provided). At Bloomfield, psychiatrists, CMOs and trainees work together in a small collegiate service. Overtime is rostered approximately one night or weekend day in ten. The Orange Base Hospital was rebuilt and opened in 2011 and is now collocated with the psychiatric units providing good medical back up.
