    ​Resources to assist teachers and educators be to learn more and educate young people about vaping.

    ​​Vaping has become a growing concern within the school community, especially the increasing number of young people who have taken up vaping. Schools are seeing the direct impact e-cigarettes are having on young people and their health. Education and awareness about the harms of vaping is a key area to help young people make informed decisions about their health. ​

    Respect Your Brain: Animated Video seriesalternate text 53: The Respect Your Brain animated video series focuses on the impact of five drugs commonly used in Australia and explores the way these drugs affect a young person’s developing brain. 


    Th​e Science of Vaping ABC Report – Behind the News (4 minutes)alternate text 54: Chemists at the University of Wollongong have been taking apart e-cigarettes and testing them. This short report discusses results including the percent of e-cigarettes that contain nicotine when not labelled with nicotine. Links to Years​ 9 & 10 Health & PE and History are included.


    Unpacking E-cigarettes Online Coursealternate text 55: The Prevention Education and Research Unit (PERU), Research and Education Network with Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) have developed this course to increase students awareness and knowledge of e-cigarette use and completements schools health education curriculum. It is self-paced and can easily be delivered within a standard school period.   ​​

NSW Population Health Survey (e-cigarettes)alternate text 47: This state survey provides an insight into e-cigarette use across the NSW. In NSW in 2022, an estimated 17.9% of people aged 16 years and over had ever used an e-cigarette (at least once) and 6.4% were current (daily or occasional) users of e-cigarettes. 


NSLHD Vaping and Young People Survey (2022)alternate text 48: Population Health Promotion (Northern Sydney Local Health District) conducted a survey on vaping use among young people. A total of 382 respondents aged between 14 and 18 years of age participated in the survey. ​​

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Laws & Regulations

National Changes

The Australian Government has announced reforms to reduce the vaping related harms through stronger legislation, enforcement, education and support. The Government plans to work with states and territories to:
  • ​​Ban the s​ale of all single use, disposable e-cigarettes/vapes
  • Increase minimum quality standards incl restricting flavours, colours and other ingredients
  • Reduce allowable nicotine concentrations and volumes
  • Require pharmaceutical-like packaging
  • Discourage people from taking up vaping through a public health information campaign
  • Monitor and prevent illegal importation and supply of non-prescription e-cigarettes in Australia.      



​New South Wales

​The NSW Government has a range of laws in place to protect against dangers associated with e-cigarettes.


Buying and Selling
The NSW Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008 outlines the laws related to buying and selling e-cigarettes. In summary:
  • Adults can buy e-cigarettes that do not contain nicotine
  • E-cigarettes and e-liquids containing nicotine are a prescription only medicine (18 years and over)
  • It is illegal to sell e-cigarettes to anyone under 18 years.
  • It is illegal to sell e-cigarettes containing nicotine to anyone (including Online sales

Enclosed Public Areas

​Smoking and using e-cigarettes are banned in all enclosed public areas including in shopping centres, cinemas, libraries, trains and buses.


Outdoor Public Areas:

​​The Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 and the Smoke-free Environment Regulation 2016 details the laws related to using e-cigarettes. Basically, wherever smoking is prohibited, using an e-cigarette (or vaping) is also prohibited. In general, you cannot vape:
  • Where you are served food
  • At the entrance to public​ buildings
  • At public playgrounds
  • At public transport stations
  • At At public swimming pools ​​
  • At sporting venues
  • In the car with children (aged under 16years)​alternate text 48
